What is Biodiversity Net Gain and how does it benefit the environment?
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an initiative that requires most new developments in England to have at least a measurable 10% increase in biodiversity compared to the pre-development baseline (before the development took place). BNG aims to ensure all new developments contribute to conserving and enhancing the natural environment whether it’s at the original site or elsewhere.
Through BNG, developers can also positively impact local communities and the economy by contributing to more visually appealing landscapes, preserving cultural and historical sites, and creating new opportunities for education and recreation. These biodiverse ecosystems can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by storing carbon, working towards mitigating climate change.
How can we support BNG needs in your business?’
BNG represents a fundamental change to the planning system and are a mandatory requirement for large developments from 12 February 2024 and small developments from April 2024. To prepare for the implementation of BNG, it’s vital that developers and stakeholders understand the policy and start planning for the assessments and compensation measures that may be necessary to meet the BNG criteria. Many existing Knight Frank clients, whether business owners or institutions have already factored in BNG to their developments, considering on-site and off-site solutions. Our team of specialists can help advise and guide you on how to meet the requirements of BNG in your development.
