South Bank is London’s vibrant hideaway. It’s bustling with The National Theatre’s brutalist charm, the sound of skateboards zooming through the undercroft and the mouth-watering colours of food markets along the river. It’s the cool, calm, collected hub that draws in businesses both big and small.
Beyond the world of business, it’s a magnet for tourists and city-dwellers who want to feel London’s heartbeat. Home to stations like Waterloo (the busiest station in the UK), Southwark and Lambeth North, with London Bridge sitting just outside of its border, it's well-placed to accommodate any commute. Plus, the area is just a bridge away from the City, with the Millennium Bridge linking Tate Modern’s creativity to St Paul’s opulence.
Amanda Lim, Head of Knight Frank's Flexible Office Solutions, said, “Many people love to work in South Bank because of its beautiful riverside views. The area also has prime transport links; a quality which has become a more important relocation factor than the historic desire to be near industry-specific clusters”.
South Bank is a place for outside-the-box thinking, and its very own Oxo Tower is a perfect example. In the 19th century, it was purchased by Liebig's Extract of Meat Company, the manufacturer of Oxo stock cubes. When the building was being renovated in its Art Deco design, the owners wanted to include an illuminated advert for Oxo stock cubes on the building’s façade.
At the time, ‘skyline advertising’ along South Bank was banned. Naturally, permission was refused, but the refurb just so happened to include three windows that stacked on top of one another, carving out the letters O X O as a way to bypass the rules.
Unsurprisingly, creative businesses flock to call it home. Advertising and marketing agencies, household media names, tech companies, architects and design gurus, independent innovators and a growing number of startups have all grabbed a slice of South Bank’s buzz.
Underpinning this is the luxury of having a lunch break by the river or on the green grass. There’s a slow-moving, nature-filled serenity to the area that other pockets of London lack. With biophilic elements like these said to improve confidence, calmness and self-esteem, you’ll welcome back a happier (and more productive) workforce after lunch.
