Ah, Hampstead. Where to start? With its rich and inspiring history, homely pubs and cafes, smorgasbord of dreamy properties and sweeping parkland, Hampstead is an inimitable jewel in London’s crown. Here, we delve into its thriving culture and give you a rundown of the best places to eat, play, rest, and muse.

Where is Hampstead?

Hampstead is situated in North London, forming the northwest part of the London Borough of Camden. It borders Belsize Park, Highgate, the Golders Green area and is a 10-minute drive away from Regent's Park, approximately.

Hampstead’s history

Originally an Anglo-Saxon village, Hampstead has been an ever-changing face over the years; a refuge for Londoners fleeing the Great Plague, a fashionable 18th-century spa town, and, more recently, an affluent and bohemian community in the 19th and 20th centuries — flocked to by scores of artists, writers, poets and intellectuals.

Notable former residents include Lord Byron, Agatha Christie, George Orwell, Elizabeth Taylor, H.G. Wells, Daphne du Maurier, Sigmund Freud, Robert Louis Stevenson, Ian Fleming, Evelyn Waugh, Cecil Beaton, John Constable — even the Sex Pistols. The list goes on.

As such, there are many preserved buildings in the area. ''There are over 75 plaques in Hampstead, around half of which are the blue plaques erected by English Heritage or its forebears; the Society of Arts, London County Council and Greater London Council,’’ says Andrew Nicholson, Knight Frank's Core Market Manager for Hampstead

Today, Hampstead is still a warm and close-knit community, making it the perfect base if you’re looking for a London home away from the noise and crowds of the inner city.

Katy Brookes, Head of Hampstead Sales at Knight Frank, agrees: ''In my opinion, Hampstead is the most special part of North London. There's a real ‘village’ atmosphere here with lots of really historic streets and properties. It's easy to forget that you're in London.''

What can I see and do in Hampstead — and where should I eat?

As you’d expect, there’s a huge amount to discover. For quality boutiques, luxury fashion, homeware, groceries, books or beauty, be sure to head to Hampstead High Street. Quirky Flask Walk is worth a visit, too.

Fancy a stroll? Soak up Hampstead’s famous Heath. Just four miles from Trafalgar Square, its 800 acres of unspoilt countryside feel a world away from urban life. Hampstead Heath also boasts the popular wild swimming Ponds, spectacular views of the London skyline — and the beautiful Hill Garden and Pergola, which is a real hidden gem. ''Hampstead Heath! Glory of London!’’ summarised Zadie Smith. Indeed.

Historical places of interest include Kenwood House, a grand 18th-century villa that houses a world-class art collection including the likes of Vermeer and Rembrandt. Its stunning interiors, regular children’s activities and café are also a real draw. The best part? Public entry is free. Keats House, former home of the English Romantic poet, John Keats, is also a fascinating destination, as is The Freud Museum.

If all that exploring has you in need of a pick-me-up, fear not; there are some great places to eat and drink nearby. Check out La Cage Imaginaire for great French cuisine in cosy surroundings, La Creperie de Hampstead for five-star sweet treats (expect queues), The Spaniard’s Inn for a superb Sunday roast — and local brunch favourite, Ginger and White.

The Knight Frank Hampstead team recommends Mani's and Coffee Cup (both local cafés serving ''amazing'' food), The Flask and Oak & Poppy

Hampstead properties

The property choice in Hampstead is wide, with a mix of breathtaking period mansions, grand contemporary residences and smaller, characterful homes making up the area’s offerings. But it's Hampstead's period architecture that really takes centre stage.

''You’ll find buildings of extraordinary architectural quality from every period from the late 17th century onwards,’’ says Andrew.

Schools in Hampstead

Hampstead is home to many independent day schools such as UCS, South Hampstead High School, Devonshire House, Heathside Prep, St. Mary’s and The Hall School.

Getting around

Hampstead Heath Rail Station provides overground services to a vast range of destinations across the capital — from Kensington to Shoreditch — as does Hampstead Underground Station, on the Northern Line. Oxford Circus and London Waterloo can both be reached in around 20 minutes, and King’s Cross St. Pancras in just 10 minutes.
