_Northern Line extension comes closer to completion connecting Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms

The Northern line extension connecting the capital to Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station on the south bank of the Thames has reached a major milestone with the first passenger trains completing journeys through the newly built tunnels over the Christmas period.
January 13, 2021

The test trains entered the 3.2km of extended Northern Line tunnels, passing through Nine Elms station before arriving at the second and final station on the extended line at Battersea Power Station.

The Northern Line Extension is the first major tube line extension since the Jubilee line in the late 1990s. The extension will connect the rest of the capital to two of the most important areas of transformation at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station, bringing this dynamic and exciting quarter on the south bank of the Thames to within 15 minutes of the City and West End.

A gateway to this £9bn regeneration project, the new station at Battersea Power Station will serve the new communities living and working in this exciting mixed-use, riverside neighbourhood, which has the iconic Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station at its heart.

One of London’s most ambitious regeneration and urban investment projects, this previously unloved stretch of riverfront has been brought to life through a mix of homes, restaurants, shops, parks, gardens, cultural spaces and office space.

2021 is an exciting year for the development with the first residents moving into Battersea Power Station from Spring 2021 and the official countdown to the grand public opening in Spring 2022 begins.

Nick Codling, Partner, London Office Agency at Knight Frank says: "More fantastic progress made at Battersea as the new Northern Line Extension Zone 1 stations reach another step closer to opening later this year. The exciting news comes as the Power Station draws ever closer to completion and the regeneration of one of London icons becomes a reality".
